Rachel’s Exchange to France for 1 month: aged 16

Name Rachel Murphy
How was your experience with Aventuro Ireland? My experience with Aventuro was brilliant. I heard about Aventuro after being handed a leaflet in school, and from then on I attended a meeting with Sinéad and her team and we organised my exchange in France from there. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I can’t thank the Aventuro team enough for guiding me through it all the way. I found a love for the French language that I didn’t know I had before, and I have made friends for life.
How has this experience enhanced your family? My family really enjoyed this experience of having Flore, my French sister back here in Ireland for a month. We went lots of places and did lots of things together with Flore that we would have never done had she not been here. We really enjoyed getting to know her and helping her along as she improved her English here in Ireland.
How did you rate the matching of the families? Why? This was definitely one of the best aspects of my experience with Aventuro. I felt Sinead really took on board anything I wanted when organising the exchange, no matter how small, and I was delighted with the family I was matched with. They were really friendly, helpful and so interested in myself and my family. They couldn’t do enough to make sure I had a brilliant time in France, offering me so many unforgettable experiences.
Did you feel supported while taking part in the exchange? Yes I felt shoud I have had any problems I could have contacted Aventuro at any time.
Write a short description on what the best aspect of the exchange is. The best aspects of this exchange were without a doubt growing to love, learn and speak the language and secondly being welcomed so warmly into Flore’s family and extended family.
Tell us about your fondest memory or best experience while on the exchange. My fondest memory is of the day I spent in Paris with Flore and her Dad, sightseeing around the city, and also the days spent with Flore’s little cousins at her grandparent’s home in the countryside, where we spent the hot afternoons in the pool, playing games and relaxing!

Clodagh’s Exchange to France for 1 month: aged 17

Clodagh Adair went to France for 1 month on her summer break between 5th year and Leaving Cert. She had a super time in France with Domitille. Bravo Clodagh!

Name Clodagh Adair
How was your experience with Aventuro Ireland? The experience with Aventuro Ireland was an exciting and pleasant one. I felt secure in the knowledge that if I had any issue with my stay, there would be someone on hand to turn to.
How has this experience enhanced your family? The experience has helped my family and I understand the difficulty for international students having to embrace different cultures and traditions. I have came to truly admire the tremendous achievements of young people who stay abroad for long periods of time.
How did you rate the matching of the families? Why? I believe that the families were well matched as my correspondent student had many of the same interests as me. The family members were welcoming and made a great effort to ensure I understood what they were saying which helped in my learning.
Did you feel supported while taking part in the exchange? I felt the mother of the family was a great source of support and security. I felt that if I had an issue I would have been able to talk to her and I was certain she would strive to help me in whatever way she could.
Write a short description on what the best aspect of the exchange is. The best aspect of the exchange was experiencing the French culture, French food and French people. I was extremely interested in the differences between Irish ways and the French ways therefore it was a great opportunity to be engaged into a French family.
Tell us about your fondest memory or best experience while on the exchange. The best experience of staying France was travelling and seeing different places within France. I loved getting to stay within different parts and witnessing the beauty of the country. I am certain, due to this experience, that I will return to France. One of my fondest memories during my stay in France was the evening my correspondent, her sister and I went to a beautiful, isolated section of the Carnac beach and they informed me that it was there favorite place in the world and that I was the only person they ever brought there, including their friends and other family members. We stayed there for a while, watching as the sun set. Another fond memory that I must include is the evening the family called me down for dinner and they had made potatoes for me as they knew we eat them everyday for dinner in Ireland. This small gesture completely lifted my spirit. I really appreciated the thought and kindness behind it.
Any recommendations on how we can improve our Aventuro exchanges? I would recommend that students are encouraged to stay as long as possible as it really does impact on your chances of completely integrating into the culture of another country. I believe my stay would have been more beneficial if I had stayed longer however due to my school year starting, I was unable to do so.
Would you recommend us to family & friends? Yes

And her Mom Gretta had this to say:

Name Gretta  Adair
How was your experience with Aventuro Ireland? The experience was a very good one overall as it promotes independence and maturity on the child’s part. It is difficult  to let your child go abroad but it’s important to help them grow as individuals.
How has this experience enhanced your family? Meeting new people and learning about new cultures is always an exciting experience. Our family have taken students for some time and we  have always learned something new. We are proud of our country and customs and we enjoy sharing our uniqueness and culture with others.
How did you rate the matching of the families? Why? The families were well matched both girls enjoyed the same activities and each other’s company.
Did you feel supported while taking part in the exchange? The exchange was monitored and controlled in a professional manner.
Tell us how your child has changed as a result of their experience The whole experience helped my child mature into a lovely young lady. Living aboard within a family unit while learning to speak a different language was an advantage with both learning French and experiencing a new country.
Any recommendations on how we can improve our Aventuro exchanges? The documents were written in French it would have made it a little easier and faster to process if it was translated into English.
Would you recommend us to family & friends? Yes

Shaun’s Exchange to France for 6 weeks: aged 15

Shaun Finan from Corofin Co Galway went off to France for 6 weeks after his Junior Cert and had an absolute ball with Agustin! He went on a scout camp, days at the beach and lots of cool watersports! Agustin loved his 6 weeks in St Jarlaths secondary school although he was confused as to why there were no girls there!! It’s all about different cultures guys!

Name Shaun Finan
How was your experience with Aventuro Ireland? I found it really fun and I learned loads!!
How has this experience enhanced your family? It has helped me realise what it is like to have a brother in the family.
How did you rate the matching of the families? Why? I would rate it 4 out of 5 as it matched my hobbies almost exactly.
Did you feel supported while taking part in the exchange? Yes, the calls from Aventuro were nice to receive and they were always happy to talk.
Write a short description on what the best aspect of the exchange is. I think it’s how you arrive over there feeling nervous about how you’re going to speak to anyone at the beginning but when you come back it’s hard to get back into speaking English again!
Tell us about your fondest memory or best experience while on the exchange. I was lucky enough to be allowed to go on a scout’s camp. I spent three weeks last year and this year out in a forest with other people the same age as me. I think this helped me learn much quicker as everyone was quick to teach and help me.
Any recommendations on how we can improve our Aventuro exchanges? Have a small space of time like a couple of days between the two exchanges i.e. when I came back to Ireland I would have liked a couple of more days with my family by myself to catch them up on how I am before having my correspondent return immediately with me.
Would you recommend us to family & friends? Yes

And here is what his Mom Annemarie had to say:

Name Ann Marie Finan
How was your experience with Aventuro Ireland? Really good. Really positive. Good fun. The whole family not just the individual child benefits.
How has this experience enhanced your family? We have made friends with the other family. We have experienced another culture. We have had really good fun and hope more is to come.
How did you rate the matching of the families? Why? Really good. Despite some differences it was the sharing of differences that added extra interest and fun.
Did you feel supported while taking part in the exchange? Definitely and this added to the ‘safety net’ feeling. Sometimes the language barrier causes confusion, having Sinead there to explain was fantastic.
Tell us how your child has changed as a result of their experience Shaun has matured as a result. He loves the language. He has had a huge amount of fun in the learning of the language. This fun has added to his self confidence. He cleans his room, cooks for himself and us the family without fuss because he saw how it was just accepted that his French friend did it. He has taken a greater interest in French affairs because he now knows French people and some of the place names are more familiar to him.
Any recommendations on how we can improve our Aventuro exchanges? Shaun is my youngest and my other children have been on exchanges, I can only say I wish I had known Aventuro Ireland at the time for them
Would you recommend us to family & friends? Yes

Hannah’s Exchange to Spain: 6 months: Aged 10

We are delighted to share Hannah’s story with you! Hannah heard an interview myself & Helga had done on Galway Bay FM with Keith Finnegan. She asked her Mom Rachel to bring her to our information meeting that week in Tuam, they came and Hannah went in Spain that August aged 10 years old, in 4th class for 6 months! She went and lived in Alicante with a super Spanish family and here is her story: Her is her Mom Rachel’s feedback:

How was your experience with Aventuro Ireland? Aventuro put time and effort into correctly matching the exchange families together.  Which meant we have formed strong bonds between our exchange family and ourselves.
How has this experience enhanced your family? The exchange experience has exposed us to another culture that we would not have otherwise experienced.  It gave us a noisier house for a while, but totally fun-filled!
How did you rate the matching of the families? Why? The match was excellent because due care and attention was paid to not only the children involved but the whole family matching.
Did you feel supported while taking part in the exchange? The support during the exchange was good, and included visits from the designated liaison person in each country.  When our daughters grandfather died unexpectedly while she was away, the Aventuro staff in both countries were highly supportive and could not have done more than they did.
Tell us how your child has changed as a result of their experience Our daughter was only 10 years old when she took part in the exchange at her own request.  She has come back as a confident young lady, with skills and abilities in language and cultural appreciation.

It has broadened her horizons and motivated her to take language learning / linguistics as a potential career choice.

Any recommendations on how we can improve our Aventuro exchanges? Some online resources to help teach our own language to the exchange child would be helpful!
Would you recommend us to family & friends? Yes
